Choosing the right vocalist for your project can make all the difference in how your music is received. Whether you’re a producer, songwriter, or band looking for a voice that fits your vision, here’s a quick guide to help you find the perfect match.

1. Identify Your Needs
Before you start searching, define what you’re looking for.
First, consider the type of service you require:
Permanent Band Member: Are you looking for a lead or backing vocalist on a permanent basis for live performances such as functions, weddings or going on tour? If so, think about the level of commitment you are seeking from your desired vocalist- you may want to hold in person auditions/interviews in order to find the best fit.
Session Singer: If you aren't looking for a permanent band member, session singers are hired on a project-by-project basis. (Check out my blog on Session Vocals if you'd like to find out more!).
Topline Writer: Do you want. a vocalist that can also create lyrics and melodies for your track? If so, seek a professional vocalist who also offers topline writing services. (Not sure what this involves? Check out my blog on Topline Writing for more information!).
Second, consider the type of vocal you require:
Genre & Style: Does your project require a powerhouse pop vocalist, jazz singer, or a gritty rock performer?
Technical Skills: Do you need someone with particular vocal skills, such as belting, riffing, distortion, sight-singing or improvisation?
Tone & Character: Consider whether you want a smooth, rich tone, or a bold, edgy voice.
2. Listen to Samples & Demos
A singer’s portfolio is the best way to gauge their vocal ability and versatility. Look for:
Studio recordings
Live performances
A range of vocal styles (if versatility is key for your project)

3. Consider Experience & Professionalism
An experienced vocalist will bring more than just a great voice; they’ll be able to take direction, deliver high-quality recordings, and work efficiently. Look for someone who:
Has experience recording in studios
Thoroughly understands and executes exceptional vocal technique
Can collaborate well with producers and musicians
4. Communication & Collaboration
Working with a vocalist is a collaborative process, so it’s important to find someone who:
Understands your vision
Is open to feedback
Can bring creativity and emotion to their performance
5. Assess Your Budget
Identify the highest and lowest you are willing to spend on getting the right vocalist for your project. If professionalism, efficiency and exceptional quality are important to you- consider that you will likely need to be looking towards the higher end of your budget.
